Help for the Helper
By Michael
This book is organized into the following sections:
"The Difference One Woman Can Make",
"Wise Home Builder",
"Helper",
"Companionship",
"Server",
"Intimacy in Marriage",
"Submission" and
"Respect"
Each section, for the most part, is made up of short, one to three page, essays that address a particular area under the broader topic.

Tara goes over God's design for women, that as a companion and a helper, and repeatedly emphasizes that regardless of what others do, each woman must make purposeful, intentional, deliberate choices. Being a godly wife is an ongoing act of the will, of course with God's assistance. In all that a wife does, she is first doing it unto the Lord.

I wish more was said about dress and dealing with tough issues of submission, but this book is an excellent start for a wife that wants to serve God in her role as a wife.

Review

  • "A twisted dark psychological thriller that will leave you breathless. I put this book up there with Dean Koontz -Intensity. It is one you do not want to put down. It is complex, the characters are fully developed and have underlying stories to tell that makes this book magic." Berta's Blog
  • "Dana Moison is a young vibrant woman who has written a thriller novel that actually had me immersed in the story from page one.I cannot wait to read more from Dana - she captured my mind and reminded me why I love reading - for the thrill, chase, and desire to know WHY." Zombieland Journey to Fitness Blog
  • "Wow, talk about a curve ball. This book has some spins in it that's for sure. Dark Illusion by DanaV. Moison is a very well written story full of suspense. The prolog itself will have you tilt your head and asking "What the!". I love how it gives each of the characters room to explore their role. I would have to say that my favorite persona is Sharon, a Detective for NYPD. A good detective follows every lead no matter what or who it is, and some even lose a lot of sleep over a case. This book is defiantly in my favorite's category.Warning: May cause sleep deprivation if read at night." Fussing's of Little Tex Blog
  • "It's not every day that I read a debut novel of a young author that wins me over without flipping forward. Dana V. Moison's book is one of those novels. A young journalist who published her first novel at the age of 23 and instantly became an emerging talent that is definitely worth following." Portal 1909, Tom Edisman
  • "Wonderful book! It combines mystery and romance and contains perseverance against wickedness, secrets against lies, and a great twist at the end." Nuritha reviews, Yael Zin
  • "There are two kinds of thriller novels: the first one doesn't tell you who the killer is and then the question is "who?" The second kind reveals relatively early the killer's identity and then the question is "why?" Dana V. Moison's novel belongs to the second kind. ...Reading this book was thrilling and intriguing."  Rinat Klein, Israeli Author
  • "Dark Illusion is a well-written mystery novel: it focuses on a serial killer who murders beautiful women and leaves their disfigured bodies all over town. Sharon Davis, an NYPD detective, is going on a quest to discover who stands behind these awful murders. Also involved are a super-model and a businesswoman who has something to hide. The twists in the plot are surprising and the solution is unexpected. In addition to that, the time is running out so the detective may not be able to save the next victim . . ."   Amnon Jackont, Israeli Author
  • "It was a mystery through and through. When you thought that you had it figured out, a twist came and totally blew you away. The twist at the end was the one that had me scratching my head and going "What in the world...."I also liked the secondary storylines between Gloria and Andy and also between Sharon and Chris. The romance between them was good and believable.A great thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat."  Life of a Crazy Mom Blog

About the Author
Dana V. Moison was born in 1989, to an Israeli mother and an American father. While most of her family resides in the U.S., she was born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel. Nevertheless, her frequent visits to her family in New York City have allowed her to experience the city as a local. New York had been the source of inspiration for her first novel, Dark Illusion, which takes place in Manhattan. In fact, quite a few chapters were handwritten at her favorite Starbucks, located in the basement floor of the Empire State Building. Soon enough she traded her ballpoint pen with a laptop and they haven't been separated ever since. Dana started working towards a degree in psychology during high school. She received her Bachelor's degree from the Open University after completing her military service as a psycho-technical diagnostician. In 2012 she headed for the French Alps to work, where she was able to polish her French and, against all odds, some pretty decent skiing skills. When she returned to Israel, she enrolled in the gender studies program at Tel Aviv University. Today she is in the final stages of her Master's degree, while pursuing a career in journalism and writing. Dana worked as a columnist for a top website in Israel before releasing her first novel at the age of 23. Dark Illusion has received many praises for its surprising plot and originality. Her second book, a suspense novel as well, is planned to be released in Israel this year.

Thrills and Chills
By Carol Kay
If you love good police thrillers about women sleuths, this one by Israeli writer Dana Moison is for you. It is well-written, great fun, and a frolic through the fashion world of New York. I won’t give the ending away—and you can’t guess it while reading. Let’s just say it is a social commentary on the illusion of beauty full of romance, strong characters, and a dose or two of vengeance.

Extraordinary Novel!
By Ori
Finally, a book that focuses on women -- three very different women to be exact -- not just as sidekicks or the occasional romantic pause for the male protagonist, but as real, multidimensional characters. What you see on the first page is definitely not what you get on the last one. And it’s full of action, desire, wickedness and sophistication. The book is articulate and absolutely ingenious, telling a profound story that offers a social commentary about the illusion of beauty and its ramifications, how beauty can be used as a deadly weapon, and the way revenge can drive us toward greatness at times but mostly hit rock bottom. A true psychological thriller!

loved it
By Angela
I was a huge fan of this book! I was impressed with the fact that even though the killer was revealed from the beginning it still didn't lack in surprises. All the twists and turns made for one very, can't put down book. Maybe that's why this was the fastest book I have ever read? My favorite part about this book is the fact that it focuses on three woman who are not only beautiful & compelling but strong and independent as well. The ending wasn't what I expected either which was so great!

A far-reaching visual survey of farm buildings across the United States, tracing their historical and regional influences.

The first in the Norton/Library of Congress Visual Sourcebooks series, Barns presents a broad, fresh, and newly informed visual analysis of one of America's fundamental building types. In a nation founded upon agrarian principles, with a cultural and physical landscape as vast as it is diverse, the barn has long been recognized as an American icon. Drawn from the vast holdings of the Library of Congress, nearly 1,000 illustrations provide a tour of barns across the United States, from New England to the Great Lakes to the South, Midwest, and Far West.

Barns traces geographical and chronological continuities of type, design, and construction, and Dutch, German, French and Spanish influence. Captions identify each document and building, and all images are included on a CD-ROM with a link to the Library’s high-resolution files.

The Best Resource on Barns
By grasshopper4
I highly recommend this book for general readers and researchers interested in relationships between architecture and history. John Vlach has a comprehensive knowledge of architecture, and he insightfully writes about the importance of barns and rural cultural landscapes as resources for studying history. This new volume is an important resource for studies of rural folk culture as it provides studies of a great variety of barns and an array of approaches for learning about vernacular architecture.

Barn Research
By S. Hadskey
I am an architect and I bought this book to research barn types for a barn I am renovating. The CD with it was a pleasant bonus, however, I wish the pictures were higher resolution. It is very difficult to ferret out the actual built details on some of these barns--the pictures in the book are small, and the CD wasn't as helpful as I hoped.. The history of barn types was very helpful, and nice to see the HABS/HAER program drawings included. It is a fairly comprehensive survey. I wish more barn types had been included in the Northeast section, and of course more structural detailing drawings or photos would have been nice throughout--not just elevations and floor plans. Structural systems for heavy timber framing and distributing lateral loads vary a lot throughout the country, and by barn type, and often inform how the barn is used--there are better books for that.

I especially liked the built farm equipment section (hay cranes), even though that wasn't why I bought it, because I'd never seen pictures of it before. And old hay stack methods before the balers were invented were also interesting. The history of the transverse crib barn was very useful.

Reforming Philosophy: A Victorian Debate on Science and Society, by Laura J. Snyder

The Victorian period in Britain was an “age of reform.”  It is therefore not surprising that two of the era’s most eminent intellects described themselves as reformers. Both William Whewell and John Stuart Mill believed that by reforming philosophy—including the philosophy of science—they could effect social and political change. But their divergent visions of this societal transformation led to a sustained and spirited controversy that covered morality, politics, science, and economics. Situating their debate within the larger context of Victorian society and its concerns, Reforming Philosophy shows how two very different men captured the intellectual spirit of the day and engaged the attention of other scientists and philosophers, including the young Charles Darwin.

Mill—philosopher, political economist, and Parliamentarian—remains a canonical author of Anglo-American philosophy, while Whewell—Anglican cleric, scientist, and educator—is now often overlooked, though in his day he was renowned as an authority on science. Placing their teachings in their proper intellectual, cultural, and argumentative spheres, Laura Snyder revises the standard views of these two important Victorian figures, showing that both men’s concerns remain relevant today.

A philosophically and historically sensitive account of the engagement of the major protagonists of Victorian British philosophy, Reforming Philosophy is the first book-length examination of the dispute between Mill and Whewell in its entirety. A rich and nuanced understanding of the intellectual spirit of Victorian Britain, it will be welcomed by philosophers and historians of science, scholars of Victorian studies, and students of the history of philosophy and political economy.

Review
“Snyder’s book is history of philosophy at its best.” (John North Times Literary Supplement 2006-10-20)

"In this impressive study of two major Victorian intellectuals, Snyder displays both analytical acumen and historical sensitivity; she has written a book that will be read with profit and pleasure by anyone interested in the history of moral, political, and philosophical reflection on science." (Richard Yeo Isis)

"This is the definitive work and must be on the shelves of any library with pretensions to completeness about the [Victorian] age." (Michael Ruse Journal of British Studies)

"Snyder's impressive achievement is not only to register a significant improvement in our understanding of the technicalities of this debate over the proper method of scientific reasoning, but also to bring the debate alive in a way that illuminates the whole terrain of mid-Victorian intellectual life." (Peter Mandler American Historical Review)

"Snyder's careful recovery of a process of knowledge-production through dialogue is compelling. . . . For those who want to understand Mill or Whewell, Snyder's is an indispensable study." (David S. Karr History)

"Snyder's great strength is in elaborating and refining our understanding of Whewell, but she does us an additional important service by situating the technical debates between Mill and Whewell in their political and social circumstances. . . . A strong contribution not only to a better understanding of 19th-century British philosophy of science, but of the intellectual foundations of that broader institutional reform as well." (Elihu Gerson Historical Studies in the Physical and Biological Sciences)

"The scholarship is everywhere evident, both in the history and in the way it relates, in often illuminating fashion, this older debate to more recent discussions, especially in ethics and in the philosophy of science." (Fred Wilson Victorian Studies)

"Tracing the intellectual origins of how two men came to understand the needs for Victorian reform is, without question, a worthwhile and interesting examination for the more traditional political or social historian." (Nancy LoPatin Lummis The Historian)

"The remarkable amount of contextual detail presented will render this volume indispensable to scholars of the history of the philosophy of science. . . . In this sophisticated and elegant intellectual history, Snyder effectively communicates complex ideas and rejuvenates Whewell's philosophical legacy." (Simon Thompson Political Studies Review)

“Brilliant. . . . [A]n exciting and comprehensive account of [the Mill-Whewell] debate. . . . Snyder’s outstanding study will be indispensable for commentators on Whewell and Mill. By providing a window on social, political, and moral issues, as well as those at the heart of scientific methodology, she also has much to offer historians of early Victorian culture. For historians of science, there is a bonus in that the receptivity of Whewell and Mill to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution is also excellently discussed.” (John Hedley Brooke Annals of Science)

“Though the broader contours of Whewell’s and Mill’s philosophies are clear enough, discerning what the two great Victorians were trying to say in any detail has been subject to lively discussion in recent years. Laura Snyder, a major voice in this discussion, now takes it to a new level. Reforming Philosophy lends their theories of induction and scientific truth new life and meaning by reassessing them in the keenly polemical context of their debates, which Snyder exposes masterfully. Much of what was philosophically at stake in these exchanges remains highly relevant and challenging. This is history of the philosophy of science at its best.” (Menachem Fisch, Tel Aviv University)

“Philosophy, theology, and politics were never far away from each other when John Stewart Mill and William Whewell engaged in a dialogue destined to last all along their mature lives. The issues they addressed were complex and multifaceted: the development of strong foundations for a science of the mind, as well as a gnoseology and an epistemology on which to ground hopes for social stability and progress. The radical Mill and the High Anglican Whewell shared many assumptions: fear of democracy and faith in a reformed intellectual clerisy. They differed strongly on who was going to appease fears and lead the times. Laura Snyder’s book helps us to get a close look at these two seminal thinkers of the modern age. For the first time, the dialogue between Mil and Whewell comes back in its own terms, and it will surprise scholars and general readers alike.” (Pietro Corsi, Oxford University)

“Dr William Whewell, the impossibly learned Master of Trinity, had an enormous influence in his own day—he was not only a more than competent scientist in his own right, but the person who coined the word ‘scientist’ in its modern sense—but he has largely vanished from sight, other than as the target of John Stuart Mill’s attacks on intuitionism. Laura Snyder has not only brought him back to life, as a philosopher of science and ethics, but has put him in his proper place in the landscape of those Victorian reformers who thought that sound thinking in science and its method was an aid to sound thinking in religion and politics, as well. It is an engrossing story and well worth the telling.” (Alan Ryan, Oxford University)

“Reforming Philosophy is a superb piece of work that fills out in needed detail the debates in the mid-nineteenth century about the nature of good science.  She follows through with understanding and clarity the ideas of the chief actors in the discussions, William Whewell and John Stuart Mill, showing that their concerns are no less valid for us today.  This book will be required reading for students of the period as well as for those interested in the way that science defined itself through the ages.” (Michael Ruse, Florida State University)

Best book on the philosophy of induction
By Kevin MacG Adams
Laura Snyder's book will become a classic. Her treatment of the important philosophical discourse between William Whewell and John Stuart Mill exposes the brilliance of Whewell's argument and the applicability of his method called Discoverers' Induction. This book is a must for all who are considering or conducting inductive research.

Masterful
By m*******va
Not only is this book well written, the research is extensive and the subject matter is brilliantly brought to life. For anyone interested in the philosophy of science, induction, and the ideas in vogue during the Victorian era, this book is a must. Laura Snyder also shows the timelessness of the issue and the importance of philosophy in the advancement of science. Moreover, in an insightful footnote, she postulates that with a relatively minor philosophic correction, Whewell's ideas ring true - and have a power to transform the debate in philosophy of science that is not typically granted to him by today's intellectuals.

An enjoyable addition, but...
By Amazon Customer
Chris has made an overwhelming statement of his concerns, by pulling down an asteroid. This hasn't gone over all that well with the U.S. government, and their attempts to threaten and control him increase.
Mix governmental concerns with the approach of Halloween and its "thinning of the veils", and the stage is set for an action-packed adventure for Chris & crew...

I've enjoyed this series from the first book, and thoroughly enjoyed this latest addition, though I agree with several commentators that mentioned that something is missing. From the beginning, we've enjoyed being deeply involved in viewing from Chris's perspective. This perspective what somewhat lost midway through "Falling Stars" with Chris's memory loss, when the "feel" of the story changed to "continuous action". (We) regained the perspective somewhat, at least from Declan's point-of-view within "Executable", but have fallen back into "observing action" within "Forced Ascent".
There were areas of increased interaction, such as Lydia's reaction to Stacia's comments concerning Tanya after the "farm scene", but the emphasis on action has left internal interactions between individuals a bit empty.

There's also the "scope growth" component, especially within "Forced Ascent". Chris has grown from an often overlooked character to an international sensation almost too quickly -- a growth in scope and action that blurs the audience's identity with Chris...
No doubt somewhat of a slowdown is in order, as is the regaining of some of his memories from (both) of his pasts. I'm sure that "Chris" would feel much more comfortable with less notoriety!

I've also heard comments mention "too much conspiracy theory". In truth, perhaps a bit too much of the "legacy black groups", though there are plenty of similar things within our current government. There are plenty of little empires that have been built along with multi-year money legislation -- continuous "continuing resolution" government doesn't help... Then, there's the degree of overlap between the "alphabet agencies", brought to light during 9/11 investigations (somewhat), but still there -- no one wants to give up their "empire".
The "events" near the book ending are less conspiracy then extrapolation -- "fear" is a very strong driving force, and the fear of a "force beyond governmental control" by those within governments will drive them to take any action to control that force (and their fears)...

I'm sure that Grim has continued learning, and won't be caught in a similar situation again. I'm also thinking that the armor that Barbiel displayed along with his sword is probably DU-proof, and that threats & hostages go two-ways...

All-in-all, an enjoyable continuation of the series -- I'm looking forward to Declan's next adventure, along with where Chris & Tanya go from here...

good, but less than previous books
By Dimsdale
I really do love this series and the author's writing style. I've re-read most of it several times. However, this book shows clear signs of the degradation in plot and character development I've come to expect in the later books of any series. Understandably, authors seem tire of finding something original for the main characters to do or say. In Forced Ascent, with the exception of the PR angle, there wasn't much that was new. Same good guys. Same bad guys. Same conflict. Same results.

I was frustrated and a little disappointed with the limited character development that there was. (Trying to avoid spoilers) Our heroic power couple are having unresolved relationship problems. There are minor characters that seem to go nowhere. There are too convenient, and too short, cameos by characters from previous books. There are shallow interactions between primary characters that have previously been deeper.

While I cringed at several plot points, these reflect the author's choices. I can't give specific examples for fear of spoiling your read. I wouldn't have made the same choices, but I'm just this guy who reads too much sci-if. What do I know?

Also, there seemed to be numerous editing issues. Passages where one character's comments are followed by a seemingly unrelated response. Passage of time and/or changes in location that aren't obviously indicated within the text. References to conversations or activity to which we have not been privy (for example, several references to a conversations about a big sword).

Of course, none of this really matters, as I'm completely hooked. I'll read whatever comes out next with enthusiasm and hope. This is a high-quality, borderline YA series, created by a very competent author. In many ways, I've enjoyed his style as much as I used to enjoy early Heinlein.

Stop at book 6.
By Silvaine
Fair warning, this review is going to be for pretty much all the books up to and including this one. I have long considered writing this review as I both love and hate this series. So many things done right, and then the author caves to his critics and it's frustrating to see him sell out. Overall BEFORE this book I will give the series a 4 star review. I am going to throw out a recommendation to all readers who have loves this series to NOT buy this book. Read Book 6, be happy for what ending it has and move on. From this point forward Mr. Conroe chooses to destroy much of what he has built to this point.

I am going to assume you have read the books up until this one so nothing about the previous books should be spoilers for you and only minor spoilers for this book. I'll address those at the end and note them before hand so you can stop reading.

The critics of Mr. Conroe have contended that Chris is "too powerful" and "nothing can stop him". They have contended that there is no fear of Chris losing. Huh, I'm pretty sure when you go to a Superman movie you are sure Superman isn't gonna die. So this is a pointless contention. Mr. Conroe caved to this though when he decided to have Chris shot in the head in a previous book and lose his memory. Mr. Conroe decided to justify this by saying he had previous experience with family and a friend who lost their memory. So what? I had a mother who lost her memory. For those of us who have dealt with this; the inclusion was a painful reminder of what it was like, there was no enjoyment to it; and to people who haven't had this happen, they won't understand it anyway. So it was nothing more then caving to his critics in order to have Chris hurt.

Sadly my major enjoyment in these books was the new relationships forged by Chris through the series as well as the development of the persistent relationships already established. I was more engrossed by the characters and how they handled the situations as people, a dynamic that was done wonderfully up until this book. Mr. Conroe did an outstanding job of character development through this series with only a few mistakes. By taking away his memory all those relationships were gone.

So everything I had enjoyed was now reset. Not much fun. I loved Tanya and Stacia and the relationship they both have with Chris and could live with not knowing any more than I did at the end of Book 6. The relationship between Chris and secondary characters was fun to observe as well. I also loved the relationship budding between Declan and Caeco. If you enjoy those relationships, then don't read PAST this book.

MINOR SPOILER FROM THIS BOOK:

Two things happen in this book which frustrated me more than all others. The first is a rather hostile fight between Chris and Tanya. Now understand, up until now we have been repeatedly told about how they can both feel each other. In one instance in a previous book a couple similar to them said that there was no way they could even hurt each other. Given that, when those emotions hit the boiling point we know from previous books that both Chris and Tanya SHOULD be hurting badly inside, feeling the others pain and immediately stopped. The scene made NO sense from a historical perspective.

The second issue is where Mr. Conroe really sells out to his critics. Chris is actually captured and maintained capture by the U.S. Government. Yes friends, the power of God (whether you are religious of not it's part of the book) is nothing in the face of the mighty depraved U.S. Government. Our indestructible hero had to be captured to appease the critics of Mr. Conroe. It was a sell out to all his faithful followers.

The rest of the books go downhill from there if you are truly a fan of the characters rather than just another story line. Sometimes a series should end, and this book should have been written better with a glorious ending, instead it starts the descent into 2 and 3 star books not worth the time or money to read.

Second Reissue
By Kevin Baker
I still have the original issue set of five novels: The Forge, The Hammer, The Anvil, The Steel and The Sword. I've read them almost to tatters. On my iPod Touch, I have the first reissue in two volumes, Warlord and Conqueror. I'm glad to see that these are still popular enough to be reissued yet again. One of the things I found most interesting about the novels was the absolutely unapologetic stance taken about the behavior of armies at war. Rape, pillage, arson were all considered merely tactics to be employed to achieve certain ends - or stomped on hard to achieve different ends. Slavery was part-and-parcel of the culture of Bellevue, and treated as such - again, no hand-wringing apologia by the authors: "This is defeat, Messer Bellamy - avoid it." These are books that are not anti-PC, but utterly indifferent to it. How refreshing, even now twenty years onward.

If you like military SF, then I highly recommend this series. You won't be disappointed.

First Commands
By Arthur W Jordin
Hope Reborn (2003) is the first SF omnibus in the General series. It contains two novels: The Forge and The Hammer.

Bellevue is a planet far from the center of the Federation. When the galactic government fell a thousand years ago, Bellevue was abandoned.

The Civil Governor was the chief Administrator of Bellevue. After the Fall, military forces on the planet seized control of areas around their headquarters. The Settlers and Colonists resisted these military units.

Now the Civil Government is only one of the polities on the planet. Priests claim that the Federation Fell because of the sins of the galactic population. They assert that Computer will only come again when enough people return to the old religion.

The Forge is the first novel in this series. Raj and Thom are examining the catacombs under the New Residence. They have found rats, bones and enough computer artifacts to supply the priesthood for a few generations. They have penetrated deeper than ever before.

Then Thom sees a light. It is nothing like the lights used by the nobility. They follow it to a jammed sliding door.

Raj uses a crowbar to slide the door a little to the side. It sticks at that point, but they can see down a shaft. There is a floor below them.

Raj and Thom link their belts together. Raj rappels down first and then Thom. Bones cover the floor. Yet they have not been chewed by vermin.

Then mirrors appear around them. Raj fires all five rounds in his pistol, but the mirrors don't break. Instead, the bullets ricochet off them.

Then Thom is frozen in midair. A voice in Raj's mind says that he will do. The voice tells him that Center has chosen him to reunite the planet. Raj believes that Center is an angel of the Computer.

Leaving Thom behind in stasis with Center, Raj returns to duty. Barholm is holding court in the Hall. As the delegations present requests to the Vice-Governor, Center shows Raj the probable results. The Vice-Governor tries to pacify the petitioners, but the Chancellor would rather take their wealth and impoverish them.

Then a delegation from the Halvardi says that the Colonists are sending their best general with an army to conquer them and control their passes. Barholm sends them to the War Ministry. But he also ends the audience and calls a council of his military advisors.

The other advisors give the usual advice, but Raj has gotten an idea from the hidden visions presented by Center. Barholm likes his plans and starts apportioning tasks to the advisors. He sends Raj with Hemlt and two battalions of troops to the borderlands.

The Hammer is the second novel in this series. Raj returns to the catacombs and finds Thom again. For Thom, the time since their last meeting has been only a moment, but Raj has spent almost two years fighting the Colonists. Center briefs Thom on the events during that time, but knowing is not the same as doing.

Raj returns to his suite with dust and grime on his clothes. Suzette figures that he has been in the catacombs, but focuses on getting him ready for the audience. Barholm is conferring with his top military leaders and chancellor about a Southern Territories Expedition.

When Raj arrives, he finds the military arguing against the Expedition. None of them want to try to retake the Civil Government's southern territories from the Squadron. The previous expedition twenty years before had been decisively defeated and they don't consider the endeavor any more feasible under current conditions.

Raj, however, doesn't view the mission as hopeless. The Squadron has not upgraded their fleet in recent years and hasn't fought a major action since the last Civil Government invasion. He states that it can be done with thirty thousand troops and probably with only fifteen thousand.

Barholm gives Raj command of the Southern Territories Expeditionary Force and promotes him to Brigadier General. The other military leaders are happy that they don't have the job. Raj submits his list of units to Barholm the next morning.

Tzetzas likes the less expensive plan. Unfortunately, he is also figuring how divert some of the money into his own pocket. Raj has Muzzaf keep an eye on the supply shipments.

Raj gets many of the troops that he had in Sandoral. He also gets Poplanish's Own commanded by Ehwardo. Unfortunately, he gets the 17th Hemmar Valley Cuirassiers commanded by Dalhouse. Raj also gets many more infantry, which he puts under Jorg.

After a month of frantic efforts, the Southern Expedition is ready to embark. They will sail south along the coastline, unloading the troops and dogs every night. Raj again wishes for a permanent administrative staff for field armies, but that is not going to happen.

These tales chronicle the rise of Raj to preeminent commander in the Civil Government. Yet his rise has gained him enemies. The Governor also suspects him of ambition to take the throne.

This volume is a reprint of Warlord, That volume was followed by Conqueror.

Raj has an easier time against the Squadron, but the Colonists are only regrouping after loss of their leader. The next omnibus installment in this sequence has not yet been announced on Amazon, but a new book in the series -- The Heretic -- has just been released.

Highly recommended for Drake & Stirling fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed conflict, field tactics, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

nice to see a reissue
By W Boudville
Hmm. Not sure if I prefer this cover to the covers of the original 2 paperbacks. But more importantly, it is wonderful that Baen has reissued the stories, that first came out over 20 [!!] years ago. I enjoyed the 5 volumes then and the current issue gives the chance for new readers to get acquainted with the series. The historical inspiration is the Byzantine general Belisarius. Now reimagined in a world fallen from interstellar civilisation after the latter tore itself apart in a ruinous star spanning civil war.

Drake owns the copyright to the series, as far as I can tell. But Stirling did most of the writing. There is the trademark Stirling style of copious descriptions of natural scenery. The book awakes the gritty feel of a real world, very much flawed; where slavery is an accepted part of every society. The technology level is early 19th century.

One twist is that the hero Raj works for an autocratic despot in a kingdom that calls itself the Civil Government. As contrasted to rebels who style themselves as the Military Government, from the original breakup.

The battle scenes are well crafted and plausible. Did Drake also write these? Though even here I suspect Stirling did most of the work.

Perhaps cynically, I note that the title of this reissue is completely new. To induce unwary readers to buy this in anticipation of a new plot?

Readers should note that around about now [March 2013] will come the latest new book in this General series, by Drake and another author,The Heretic (Raj Whitehall). Sadly, Stirling was either not asked by Drake to coauthor it, or Stirling declined. But if you like the current book then try a gander at Heretic.
