The Best Hitchcock Juvenile Collection

When I was a child in the 1960s I took this book out of the library several times and it seemed to cast a spell over me. The illustrations were creepy and marvelously done, and it ran chills up my spines just to look at the pictures. This was the first book in the Random House Hitchcock "juvenile" anthology collection--I put the "juvenile" in quotes because the majority of the stories in this collection weren't written for children at all, but for adults. In fact it was above my reading level at the time and I could never get through it. As an adult I've since collected all the juvenile anthologies, but this one, and Haunted Houseful are by far the best of the series. If you're an adult thinking they might be good gifts for the young people in your lives, think again. I gave copies of these to my nephew when he was a child and I don't think he even attempted to read them. The kids now-a-days don't even know who Alfred Hitchock was, nor is it likely they've watched any of the Hitchcock movies or tv shows as we baby boomers did. I think this book is great for nostaligia and just some plain old scary stories with well known authors for the most part. In fact, I can honestly say, the entire series is better and more enjoyable than Hitchcock's adult anthologies--which were mostly forgettable pulp authors.

Not just for kids...

I first discovered the Alfred Hitchcock anthologies when I was in about fourth grade. Recently I found _Ghostly Galleries_ and _Haunted Houseful_ in a bookstore, and snapped them up for my kids to read when they get older. Of course, I had to read them again for the sake of nostalgia, and I found that I still enjoyed the stories as much as when I was 10. The collections feature some of the greatest names in fiction writing. _Ghostly Galleries_ has stories by H.G. Wells ("The Truth About Pycraft"), Robert Louis Stevenson ("The Isle of Voices"), Algernon Blackwood ("The Valley of the Beasts"), F. Marion Crawford ("The Upper Berth") and Lord Dunsany ("In a Dim Room"). Less well known, but a personal favorite of mine, is Robert Arthur ("The Haunted Trailer," "The Wonderful Day" and "Obstinate Uncle Otis"). He also helped edit the book, and was responsible for those great "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" anthologies, like _Stories My Mother Never Told Me_. If you're considering this book for your kids, most of the stories have a very mild 'spook' factor, and some are more humorous than scary, like "Miss Emmeline Takes Off" by Walter Brooks. "The Upper Berth" is probably the spookiest, but a ten year-old should be able to handle it. I did. If you're considering the book for yourself, rest assured that the stories are classics in the genre of pulp fiction, that is, stories from the old Weird Tales type publications that mixed horror, mystery, sci-fi and humor. There's more emphasis on humor than horror, but you should find the reading enjoyable.

Classroom management

The book is excellent for new teachers in the classroom. It gives insight on how to manage classroom behavior of the students. I am substituting right now and I have written down many things I can do to help me better manage the students and give me peace of mind. I am also taking a course on classroom management and this was the textbook. I am getting a master's to be able to become a teacher.

It is a good resource, but doesn't contain all the details

I would definitely buy this book again. It is a great resource for teachers wanting to set up their classrooms. I found many great ideas on setting up a classroom environment and as I read I made note of items that I would refer to later. I am keeping this book on my shelf as a permanent resource to refer back to as I need it, and I will often.

The book contains a lot of information which is really nice, but in one chapter it only gives an overview of classroom management programs and I was longing for more details on those. However, I can understand why the information was condensed because the book would be really long otherwise.

Overall this book gives me somewhere to start in designing my classroom and has a lot of good information and ideas on how to do it in the best way.

About the Author
St. Pio of Pietrelcina was born as Francesco Forgione in 1877 at Pietrelcina, Italy. At the age of five he reportedly decided to dedicate his life to God, becoming a novice of the Capuchin Friars ten years afterward with the customary vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He received Holy Orders in 1910, and subsequently served many of the faithful as a spiritual director. Though he suffered a great deal both spiritually and physically, he always remained firm in the confidence of Jesus, Mary, and his Guardian Angel. Padre Pio was also a famed Stigmatist, and died on the twenty-third of September, 1968. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002, and his feast is celebrated on the twenty-third of September.

A Book I Hold Dear to My Heart

Padre Pio is someone I revere deeply. This book is divine. It has helped me through hard times. Many times, I seek help from the book by communicating my troubles to Padre Pio. For 2 years I suffered from a terrible affliction and yesterday, after hearing about the death of a close one, I felt so consumed that I held the book close to my heart. Had I known that my husband's cousin was suffering this much, I would have prayed for him but no one told me. At about 2-3 in the morning, I got up to use the washroom and touched the lump but there was none. It was just not possible because I have suffered for so long quietly that my husband did not even know. I was so shocked that all I wanted to do was run to wake my husband and share my joy but he was so sound asleep. Yes, this book is divine and this is not the only time my prayers were answered. It has happened before. There is something miraculous about the pictures and the sight of the stigmata.

I just wanted to share what this book has done for me and hope it helps all those who draw their inspiration from Padre Pio. Only 2 weeks ago, I was consumed by a heavy lily scent in the garage and did not know where it came from then this healing happened, so yes, he is there!

Sweet and poignant

The size of a pocketbook, this booklet is easy introduction to any number of things, Padre Pio himself, our Immaculate Mother, or our Catholic Faith. Having been born into a traditional Hispanic Catholic family, I take for granted the reverence and honor due to our Immaculate Mother. Non-believers can judge for themselves what to make of our devotion to her, in reading Padre Pio's long and beautifully composed meditation. I was made ashamed by my lack of devotion. This meditation for Our Lady shows instantly how deep and rich his faith is, in her for her unique role in our salvation. She who was most pure, most chaste, and full of grace - The Women deemed worthy enough since the fall of Eve to inflesh the Lord's Loving Mercy in Jesus Christ for the salvation and sanctification of our souls, does truly disserve to be honored and loved for her role in our salvation. "Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee..." said the archangel in greeting her whilst expressing the will of the Lord to her. She could have said no, but she conceded and in her womb was conceived our salvation. That is what Padre Pio brings into our understanding in this beautiful mediation.
