Would have been five stars if not for virtually same book published separately

This author gets kudos for being the first to the Kindle market with a coherent book on implementing the ESP8266. But I have to deduct a star for the confusion caused by publishing two books from the same author with the same cover art. The other book is titled "Internet of Things with the ESP8266." I bought and read the IOT book before this one.

Both books are very similar. In fact, I'd say the first 25% which covers selecting a module and setting up your IDE are essentially the same. I haven't checked, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was confirmed those sections are verbatim copies.

The projects in the remaining 75% of both books are even similar. The key difference is this book implements with web servers on the ESP8266 and your PC inside your own network. The IOT book implements using cloud-based services.

As it turned out, I was looking to implement inside my own network, so this is the correct book for me. I could have saved a few bucks and 45 minutes reading the other book if I had known how the books differed up front.

I think it was a little shady for the publisher to go with this two book approach. They could easily be combined into one. And at the very least the descriptions could have made the distinction more clear.

I hope this review helps others avoid the confusion the publisher caused.

That issue aside, the book is good as a brief tutorial on getting your initial projects going with the ESP8266. The projects are good foundations to build on and customize for your own needs.

Update 5/3/15:
A few additional points after using this book as a basis for tinkering with my ESP-01 and ESP-03 modules.

I found the connections to FTDI in the book didn't work for me. Several web sites suggest connecting GPIO0 to ground when programming. This worked for me. On my breadboard I place a momentary switch between GPIO0 and ground and press it while flashing.

The web server code in the book is quite elegant. But it uses a combination of frameworks I'm not familiar with, and that I can't find additional examples for on the web. I'd like to add a selection control to control multiple devices, but there is no such example in the book, or any other advice on how to extend beyond buttons.

As an aside, I learned the hard way that cheap Chinese FTDI modules can cause big problems with the ESP8266. I thought I'd bricked two of mine flashing with the Arduono IDE. On boot up they would lock after saying fatal exception. I resurrected them by connecting a different FTDI module and flashing with the AT firmware. Then I could flash them from the Arduino IDE.

Okay for an expensive 38 page introductory phamphlet

It is just okay, all the information is available on the internet if you look a little, and this book really doesn’t give enough specifics to not have to spend a lot of time on the internet looking for more information. Okay for generic information, but don't expect it to get you very far. But what can you expect from a 38 page, it is an introductory pamphlet more than anything. A bit over priced for that ******DO NOT BUY BOTH****** they are mostly the same - Internet of things geared to posting on the internet, Home Automation, geared to local network. Only get one if you must, and go to the internet for the details. The environment is changing every day, so you really have to be looking on the internet to have current information.

All the reference that you need

As a beginning "mandy" player (I also play guitar, keyboards, and Native American flute), I have found this book to be all the reference I need for playing scales and chords for the mandolin. In addition, I've been able to apply the same information in this book to the violin (Since I'm trying to learn the violin as well as the mandolin). Also, check out Mel Bay's Deluxe Encyclopedia of Mandolin Chords. Either book is a great source of information although I find myself referencing the Mandolin Scales and Studies book more and more.

Just what I needed.

My mandolin instructor suggested this book as a possible book to help with my scales and get some extra exercises to help improve my playing. So glad I ended up getting it, because it is full of great scale exercises that have really helped me learn how to pick and find notes faster. I use the scale exercises after I'm done practicing my lesson "homework" as an extra little bit of practice, and I like having some ideas to work from since I'm still too new at mandolin to be making up my own stuff. Really great book for any beginning mandolin player.

Good start

I purchased this book to teach myself how to play the mandolin and although I still can't play, I feel this is a good book. I can't read music and have no musical background at all, but feel this book will help me as soon as I really put my nose to the grindstone. Mel Bay has quite a few good teaching books.

Ten years of writing commercially went by and one day I felt that I needed to make a shift in my career.
It took me another ten years to figure out how to do it, and then five more before the result--THE GALAPAGOS AGENDA--saw the light of publication.
The details of how and why I felt the need to change are not part of this story.
Maybe another time.

This is the story of what I decided to do when I decided to shift.
In short, I decided to create a new sub-genre within the thriller genre.
Or rather, I discovered that, what I had to do, was find a vehicle for the topics that I wanted to write about--to share my discoveries--a format that would allow me to follow the rules of publication without, well, actually being stuck in a jail of my own making!
One of the first rules is that if you wish to be successful in a writing career--besides writing well and telling a damn good story--you must choose a genre to write in.
A genre that your name will be attached to.
"Oh yes, he writes 'medical thrillers'" or "She writes 'vampire stories'."

As a quick side note, the "jail of my own making" thing was something I'd seen happen to others over the years: they became successful in a given genre, but because of the genre's canons, they were more or less forced to write a similar book every time, and that led to something they probably hadn't bargained for.
Many of them I admired, but stopped reading them. 
And many of them even stopped writing their books themselves.
What did I come up with to avoid this pitfall?

In short: Paradigm Shift Thrillers.
Stories where not only the protagonist goes through a character arc, but readers as well. Stories where readers will (I hope) experience a shift in their understanding of something--of an aspect of our world--which they most likely didn't know or weren't aware of.
Something potentially monumental.
Something to make them "shift" their paradigm about an aspect of society and the world we live in.

In The Galapagos Agenda--the first book in the series--the topic is politics.
Or rather, the profile of people in positions of power--political or otherwise ... though they have always been very closely linked (behind the scenes).
The science is called "Political Ponerology," as coined by Andrew Lobaczewski, a Polish psychologist who wrote a book with that name. Basically, Lobaczewski recognized that the percentage of people in positions of power that are psychopaths is larger than we might think.
First of all, about one percent of the population are "true" psychopaths--clinical psychopaths and criminal psychopaths.
Another three percent--mostly known as sociopaths--are also psychopaths, yet social and personal experiences have been the reason why their ability to feel empathy and have a conscience has been destroyed, why they are compulsive liars and disregard laws, social mores, the rights of others and fail to feel guilt or remorse.
In other words, four percent for the world's population are psychopaths, yet they seem to be called to positions of power like moths to light.
For example, about ten percent of employees working in Wall Street are considered to have psychopathic traits, and about twenty percent of top CEOs, according to Robert Hare (Without Conscience), are clinical psychopaths. 
Basically, the people who have found their way to top tiers of management and basically call the shots in the world--in one way or another--are not necessarily criminal, but there is definitely something wrong with them.
Because they can do anything at all. Stuff, we normal mortals, couldn't.
Or will not unless utterly forced to.
Maybe not even then.
But four percent of humanity ... no problem at all!
In fact, they are the main single cause for deliberate mass human extermination, paling the social effects provoked by serial killers.

My question was, though, How can they not only survive but thrive in our society, throughout millennia, to the point where they are the ones basically calling the shots in our society?
You see, if something isn't right in Nature, it doesn't last.
If certain limits are surpassed, destructive behavior as well as self-destructive behavior will turn itself against the species that is causing the harm.
Yet these folks have somehow managed to appear again and again in our history, and we don't seem to learn the lesson. We actually vote for the Hitlers of the world to rule over us. We actually admire those who have made their millions--if not billions--by sheer ruthless behavior.
They are with us all the time, but just haven't realized it.
How can that be?

The answer to my question came from biology, from something called "stigmergy," where an action leaves a trail or mark in the environment--such as the chemical trails left by insects--giving rise to apparently intelligent, coordinated and complex behavior. 
These agents--psychopaths--have been leaving a trail in an environment--bureaucracy--and now we are stuck with a system that not only supports their kind, but nurtures them.
This, I thought, would be a great subject to kick off my new sub-genre.
In The Galapagos Agenda, the son of a clinical psychopath--a corporate tycoon--ends up having to face not only the truth about what his father is, but how such people have managed to rise to top positions throughout history being the main cause for the recurrent man-made sufferings of humanity.
Because they can remain invisible ... until it's too late.

Nothing is predictable, layers and layers of mind engaging mystery and intrigue.

There are layers and layers of mind engaging mystery and intrigue, against backdrops of international scale. The characters are revealed in their fullness and depth, as the story progresses. Nothing is predictable, as the reader is rivited by the author's attention to the details and clues masterfully woven into an International Intrigue in the mysterious waters and islands of the Galapagos. The author's first hand experience of the Galapagos, is evident and we transported to front row seats as the adventure: political, personal, and of earth shaking proportions unfolds masterfully. The realistic parallels to the world we live in: with the deep roots of sociopathic/psychopathic behavior in the powers that rule is a deeper theme that is worthy of our attention . I also could not put this book down and eagerly await the series that is so relevent to the world we live in. It is a Paradigm Shift Thriller in the most complete sense.

Very interesting and eye opening!!!

I loved this book! The story starts fast. Right in the beginning, the main character gets in a trouble where he is accused of a murder that he didn't commit. While he is trying to find the truth, he gets into several catch 22 situations. As the story unfolds, when you think you know who is behind it all, the plot changes direction and it gets even more complex. It is hard to stop reading because you want to really know who the perpetuator is. I love when I find a book with this level of suspense.

This is a great book because it talks about a lot of things that we find in our current reality, unseen to most, but once you notice what is happening, you begin to see it everywhere. Our world is ruled by psychopaths that are running corporations and governments, and corporations themselves act like psychopaths, but nobody is talking about this. When you hear the "news", the typical psychopath is a criminal that is uneducated and kills several people or commits several crimes. You never hear in the news about the psychopaths that are intelligent, manipulative, who wear suits and manage corporations that sell products that end up killing millions of people. You never hear about how corporations threaten people that have new ideas that could change the world because that is a treat to their economic success. I learned that there are some corporations in the world that are even more powerful than a many countries. This book talks about all this, making you really understand what is happening around us.

The author creates a great story that involves the struggle between the interests of corporations that are more powerful than countries, and how the most powerful countries manipulate things to stay in power.

I love books that illustrate about interesting things going on in the world by means of a great story that motivates you to continue reading.

I enjoy reading adventure thrillers the most

This book will get you hooked!
I enjoy reading adventure thrillers the most, and this story was all I can think about until I was done. The first half of the story develops at a fast pace, the way Leonardo describes the action and chain of events is beautifully detailed and allows your brain to paint the picture and the scenes in your mind, pulling you in to the story. I like the subtle pieces of information he sneaks in there about different eras and real characters and historical events. The way he describes the settings of the Galapagos Islands gives you a glance of what makes these place as unique as it is without over selling it, you can't help it but to wish you can be there.
I felt that towards the climax of the book the events developed a little too quickly, avoiding a tremendous amount of complications that the type of people he is dealing with will inevitably have, as if he made it out too easily, however the path for a second book is wide open and can't wait to see if a sequel will follow.
I absolutely loved the book and consider it a great read, I particularly liked the fact that the story dives into the action from the very beginning, you don't have to wait a few chapters to get intrigued and it will get you from the start!
