About the Author
John Mortimer is a playwright, novelist, and former practicing barrister who has written many film scripts as well as stage, radio, and television plays, the Rumpole plays, for which he received the British Academy Writer of the Year Award, and the adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited. They're All Guilty of Something

Mortimer gives another magnificent collection of stories with a good leavening of mystery, whimsey, and insight into the workings of the criminal justice system. One recurring theme of the stories is lawyer-client relations, which can become quite strained on occasion. As always, Horace Rumpole has a few insightful remarks to make on the subject:
"People show an almost comic relief at not being locked up. They actually enjoy not having to share one chamber-pot through endless nights with vindictive, frightened, and sexually frustrated strangers."
"One thing you can never guarantee about clients is that they won't behave like lunatics."
"I could win most of my cases if it weren't for my clients. Clients have no tact, the poor darlings. No sensitivity. They will waltz into the witness-box and blurt out things which are far better left unblurted."
"They're all guilty of something, my dear old thing. Everyone's guilty of something."

More of the Great Rumpole

Horace Rumpole presents himself as just an Old Bailey hack doing run-of-the-mill burglary defenses and the odd car-heist case. In reality he defends the best in the Anglo-American legal traditions against modern forces (for example, the presumption of innocence) - and this was written 20+ years ago!

Rumpole is the lovable defender of the average man and foe to all stick-in-the-muds. His motto "Never plead guilty." It could just as well be comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. We love the Rumpole books. My husband and I have read all the Omnibus books. We've never watched the series, so we have our own images of all the main characters: Rumpole, The Bull, "She Who Must Be Obeyed." Good stories...fun characters. Good threading of plot and characters through all the stories. Love it!

About the Author
PIETRO PENZA is Manager of the Financial Risk Management practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers' Rome office. He specializes in risk measurement and management, and value-based management. Previously, he worked with Banca Agrileasing as an in-house consultant and business analyst.

VIPUL K. BANSAL, PhD, CFA, CFP, is Associate Professor of Finance at the Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John's University. He was cofounder and associate director/treasurer of the International Association of Financial Engineers from 1991-1998. He conducts seminars on wide-ranging topics throughout the world. He has had assignments with numerous leading organizations, including Goldman Sachs, Citicorp, Salomon Smith Barney, Bloomberg, and The World Bank. Unclear, and full of errors.

I stopped reading this book after the first 7 chapters. It's easy going conceptually, but manages to be very irritating for the following reasons: The "definitions" are often confusing and unilluminating, although the examples that follow generally manage to get the idea across. There are also a large number of mathematical errors, which I was able to clear up only because I'm already familiar with the essentials of VaR. As a first introduction, the book is therefore useless. Perhaps the remaining 10 chapters of the book are of sterling quality -- to hedge against this eventuality I award two stars, rather than just one -- but I will be seeking another source.
[And shame, shame, shame on Wiley Finance's editors. Apart from the above errors, here are just two howlers that prove that the book was published before anybody read it: "Neper's number" for e (Napier?), "phenomene" as plural of phenomena (which would have made a kind of grammatical sense weren't it for the fact that phenomena is alread the plural of phenomenon.) No doubt Wiley Finance believes that sales are unaffected by reputation.]

Very Comprehensive, But too few examples

Penza and Bansal has done a good work on making a whole picture of Market Risk Measurement. With the clear explanation, it helps the beginners to quickly grasp the concept on Market Risk Measurement. It is well organized in 16 chapters, beginning with a few chapters on financial risk management in banking, including a review on the traditional Asset/ Liability Management. The review on Mathematical and statistical techniques is very well described. The authors also explained the analysis of pricing financial assets, including Fixed-income, equity, and derivative. Finally, they show the common methodologies to calculate VaR-Parametric, Historical Simulation and Monte Carlo Simulation.
I considered this book as a good literature review on Value at Risk, but not the step-by-step one. It provides complete set of formulas but too few examples. I recommend for beginning- and intermediate-level readers who want to know the overall concept of Value at Risk.

A Good Read!

This book is a detailed and meticulous presentation of the calculations involved in Value at Risk (VaR) measurement. According to authors Pietro Penza and Vipul K. Bansal, Value at Risk is one of the most popular approaches to measuring the risk of harm to financial portfolios. It is a valuable institutional tool. Be aware, though, the book's message and how-to assistance will seem generally irrelevant to individual investors, except for a handful of extremely high net worth individuals at the top of the Forbes 400. Its calculations are beyond the ken of most non-mathematicians, but they will intrigue the right audience. We find this book to be a useful addition to the libraries of professional investors, bankers or risk managers, particularly those with highly developed analytical skills and a certain degree of comfort with financial engineering. Some other financial managers and lay readers will find useful information here, though they may need to walk on tiptoes through those sections of the content that are over their heads.

Robert D. "Bob" Christ is President of SeaTrepid International, a full-service subsea robotics company operating a fleet of over 35 ROVs worldwide. Mr. Christ began his ROV career with Oceaneering then continued on as a co-founder of VideoRay (a leading OCROV manufacturer) and has continued his career as the founder of SeaTrepid. He has dual BS degrees from Louisiana Tech University and lives in heart of the US Offshore Oil & Gas industry in Southeastern Louisiana.

Excellent Reference and Practical Guide

The ROV Manual by Bob Christ and Bob Wernli is a great reference book for operators, pilots and owners. A good manual that can be used as a textbook or simply as a reference has been needed for a long time. With chapters on subjects ranging from the history of ROVs, to practical, hands-on tips for specific types of field operations it is a wealth of information for the newcomer and seasoned pilot alike. I highly recommend it. (In the interest of full disclosure, I contributed the section on lighting in chapter 3 but don't let that dissuade you. This is an excellent book).

About the Author
Reem al-Nimer is a Palestinian activist and the widow of Abu al-Abbas, the iconic leader of the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF). Hailing from landed Palestinian notability, she grew up in Beirut, where she joined Yasser Arafat s Fatah Movement. Her marriage to Abu al-Abbas took her to Tunis, Damascus, Libya, and Baghdad the city where she first met her husband in 1975 and last saw him shortly before the US invasion in 2003. Abu al-Abbas died in US custody in March, 2004.

a story of human struggle against manipulation and suppression

Perhaps war is not new to the Holy Land, but the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been the deadliest and the most destructive. Public opinion worldwide is split between the two factions and media agencies and news channels tend to side with one of the conflicting parties, leaving the truth blurred and difficult to identify. There are thousands of documents published on the subject, almost daily, but few truly reveal the more important aspects of the conflict. However, approaching the very sensitive and particular history of the Palestinian- Israeli conflict requires reading not only relevant official material exposed after a certain period of time, but also the personal memoirs of its major actors, the individuals whose lives have actually altered and affected history.

Reem Al-Nimer, in her "Curse of the Achille Lauro," places in our hands the story of her life with Abu al-Abbas. They were two Palestinian martyrs whose lives were profoundly shaped by the conflict. It is the story of an endless struggle, filled with pain and sorrow, of two human beings who devoted their lives to the Palestinian cause. This struggle was not merely a political one for them, but also personal in their attempt to lead a normal life of dignity and comfort. In her book, Reem, tries to put the deeds of her husband, a military commander and the Palestinian general responsible for the famous Achille Lauro catastrophe, in a personal, historical, political and human perspective. She vividly explains what went wrong in the famous operation, whose original goal was very different from what it actually produced.

She tells us how her husband, a loving father of five, was condemned thereafter as a terrorist. Her book demonstrates how they tried to lead normal lives from hereafter, always struggling to return to their native Palestine. Reem takes us on a tour of her memories, which run parallel to millions of other Palestinians who suffered from occupation, war, and displacement. She paints a vivid picture of how horrible and terrifying life can be not only as an activist but also as a mother living one war after another, in Lebanon, Iraq, and Gaza.

This is a story of human struggle against manipulation and suppression, where two people seek to remind the world of the plight of the Palestinians, at a time when that struggle seems all but forgotten by dispute, corruption, and negligence. This book is a precious work first and foremost because it contextualizes episodes of history rarely spoken of in mainstream media and exposes our world today, where information is never revealed without an ulterior motive, modified according to political agendas and national interests. Finally, after the dolorous death of her husband while in custody at a US jail in Iraq, Reem calls for peace: a general and universal peace for all people, Israelis and Palestinians alike, so that no one must live in fear of losing their loved ones.

IMPRESSIVE STORY

I finished reading "Curse of the Achille Lauro" and was impressed by the story Reem al-Nimer had to tell. The author is the widow of Abu al-Abbas, the former right hand man of Yasser Arafat who was one of the most dedicated advocates for reclaiming the Palestinian homeland. Violent acts against Israel were justified in the name of justice. Yet, as the lives of these two freedom fighters (aka, terrorists) evolved, it became clear that their fight was futile. In the end both al-Abbas and al-Nimer come to the realization that their objective of reclaiming a homeland could be achieved only by Palestinians and Jews agreeing to live peacefully together. This idea is slowly taking hold with people on both sides.

The book also sheds light on the history and convoluted politics of the region in ways no other book has been able to do so well. I hope it becomes a national, no, international, best seller.

It is an honest and self-critical account that blends the struggles of a woman to be a mother and wife as well as a combatant in the Palestinian struggle. And most of all, it works convincingly toward the only approach that brings hope of peace to both peoples: the willingness to live together on the basis of equality and respect for the dignity of the other. An admirable attempt to transcend conventional wisdom on the Palestine/Israel conflict at a time when many have reached the conclusion that there is no solution.

Philip Wylie's Vision of L.A.: A Very Bleak One

Science fiction writers have been plentiful throughout history; and Philip Wylie, though not a "superstar" like, say, H.G. Wells in his day, or, more recently, Ray Bradbury or Arthur C. Clarke, was someone who always bought something to the table, whether it be in pulp form, satire, or visions of Dystopian futures. He also helped provide the basis for the 1951 George Pal sci-fi classic WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, a film that presages by several decades such similar films as METEOR, NIGHT OF THE COMET, ARMAGEDDON, and DEEP IMAPCT.

The dark Dystopian side of Wylie was revealed one final time in the screenplay he provided for an episode of the NBC-TV series "The Name Of The Game", an episode entitled L.A. 2017. In it, series regular Gene Barry (as People magazine publisher Glenn Howard) finds himself enmeshed in an ecological nightmare of the 21st century as pollution has forced the citizens of Los Angeles underground and into a society that looks like something out of George Orwell. Wylie's fascinating, sometimes darkly satirical look at this world was further enhanced by what the episode's director, a young "kid" named Steven Spielberg, did to make it feel realistic in the confines of what might otherwise have been a standard 75 minute-long TV episode. L.A. 2017 aired on January 15, 1971 and was highly acclaimed, thanks to both Wylie's intelligent and sometimes bitingly satirical dialogue and Spielberg's concise direction.

The subsequent novel Wylie published shortly after the episode aired, titled "Los Angeles: A.D. 2017", is an excellent expansion on that episode. In many ways, not only does it expand on the episode itself, but it also echoes elements of Orwell's "1984" and Franz Kafka's "The Trial"; and in its view of an ecological nightmare, foretells some of the elements found in the 2006 documentary film AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH.

This novelization was one of the last works published by Wylie, since he passed away at the age of 69 on October 25, 1971. It is a book that is relatively small but a very solid read, especially in light of the TV episode that spawned it, and a reminder of the kind of hard science fiction that is not easy to find much anymore these days, either in print or on celluloid.

As a sidebar: it would be good for Universal Studios, whose television division produced "The Name Of The Game" (which ran from 1968 to 1971) to release L.A. 2017 on DVD. It is by far one of the single most inventive dramatic episodes ever put on television, in my opinion.

Novelist Philip Wylie, well known for his pro-conservation stance, wrote the teleplay for the made-for-TV L.A. 2017. Publisher Glenn Howard (Gene Barry) is suddenly whisked away from his plush office in 1971. He finds himself in a world beneath the Earth's surface, circa 2017. In "L.A. 2017," Glenn Howard is on the way back from a top-secret meeting held by a group of top scientists and industrialists discussing the very serious threats the environment (abused by polution) holds for mankind. Howard, a friend of the President of the United States (who happened to be purposefully left in the dark about the meeting), drives along a rural highway outside of L.A. after the meeting, speaking into a tape recording he is making for the President about the meeting. As he drives, Howard opens the air vent to his automobile, letting a healthy dose of L.A. smog and auto exhaust into his car and lungs, which causes him to pass out at the wheel.

Time passes and Howard is now slumped over the wheel at the roadside, where his crashed auto has been found by a squad of men wearing odd uniforms and gas masks. Howard is awoken and transported across a suddenly foreign looking terrain-a desolate wasteland--to an underground facility. As he is revived, Howard finds himself in a new world, forty-six years in the future!

L.A. is now a small underground outpost where survivors of the ecological catastrophe Howard and the industrialists were discussing in 1971 has come true. After being grilled by the police state (run by psychiatrists!), Howard is indoctrinated into the new society by Dane (Barry Sullivan), the leader of the L.A. branch of the U.S., which is now run by big-business.

As Howard learns more about what has become of society, it becomes apparent that Dane and his cohorts are running things as a big-brother dictatorship (in an oppressive future society not unlike "1984," "THX-1138," "Brazil" (both films share 'well-meaning' terrorist bombings), or Spielberg's own "Minority Report"), where personal freedoms, life, and love are no longer a benefit of freewill...

* Describe a structured approach to understanding major ocular conditions based on a hierarchical framework of topography, disease process, general diagnosis and differential diagnosis
* Summarize the steps in handling ocular specimens for pathologic study, including obtaining, dissecting, processing, and staining tissues
* Identify those ophthalmic lesions that indicate systemic disease and are potentially life threatening
