About the Author
John B. Wachtman, PHD, was Sosman Professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Since he received his degree from the University of Maryland in 1961, he has worked as a research scientist, division chief, and director of the Center for Materials Research at the National Bureau of Standards. Dr. Wachtman is the author of several books and holds many awards, honors, and offices in various scientific societies.

W. Roger Cannon, PHD, is Professor Emeritus of Materials Science and Engineering at Rutgers University. He was previously on the research staff of MIT's Ceramic Processing Laboratory after receiving his PhD from Stanford University. His interests include mechanical properties, especially creep, sintering, and tape casting.

M. John Matthewson, PHD, is Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Rutgers University. His research interests include the mechanical properties and reliability of materials and, in particular, of optical fiber and fiber components. He also works on computational modeling of various materials-related issues, including processing, sintering, and lifetime calculations.

Quality text both for learning and reference

I find this text to be very useful. I used it primarily as a supplement to the class lectures/notes. Currently its on my bookshelf, and I intend to keep it for future reference.

Pros:
-A great reference if you read a lot of articles dealing with strength/failure assessment of materials.
-Lots of information on material design. What kind of compositions lead to high strength or very tough materials, etc.
-Lots of example data/plots. I find these really helpful when I'm trying to make sense of a figures in journal articles.

Cons:
-I had to review some of the derivations a few times to understand what was going on... Although to be fair, its a rare text that imparts complete understanding in one read through.

It was a twofold effort, of invoking and bringing down the dynamism of the supreme Truth on the earthly plane, and preparing the unregenerate inconscient material nature to receive it for its unhampered action. The spiritual and occult-yogic tapasya carried out together by him and the Mother saw that this was done. That opened up new doors, bright doors of the physical, for the entry of the Infinite's dimensions in the earth-possibilities. Presently it has made its manifestation an accomplished fact, here in the physical’s subtle.

We have a detailed account of these developments in Savitri; it is the most complete Record of Yoga of his yoga-tapasya—and also of the Mother's up to that point, till 1950. Aswapati has based his life upon Eternity. He knows the source from which his spirit came, but he has accepted the body of the earth. The cosmic past weighs heavily in it. It is in this body that the powers and possibilities of the spirit have to enter in and work. There is a degree of receptivity but the members feel tired soon. The imperative is, the body’s cells must hold the Immortal’s flame. This has happened.

The Mother reveals. “The physical realisation is truly a concrete realisation. For the first time, I saw myself, my body—truly a harmonious form. The supramental world exists in a permanent way, and I am there permanently in a supramental body. I now know that for the two worlds to join in a constant and conscious relationship what is missing is an intermediate zone between the existing physical world and the supramental world as it exists. This zone has yet to be built.” The Mother’s Yoga of Cellular Transformation begins in it.

In the present work we have excerpted broadly passages from the revelations made by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother about their attempts and realisations. These accounts roughly corresponds to the period 1940 to 1973 when the Mother withdrew from her physical body—the three decades in which intense yoga-tapasya was done in the physical for the Divine’s physical. We are extremely fortunate that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother have left some of these details as a part of their consciousness for us to enter in, grow in it, the new Consciousness the Mother spoke of on 1 January 1969.

I love, love, love it. Squeezing in time to catch little parts to carry with me through the day, this is worth not only reading but studying and digesting. The writer trained in the European poetic tradition before he returned to his Indian homeland to discover the riches of the older writings and successfully (I think) speaks from, with, and to the cosmic soul within us all. In his book, The Future of Poetry, he defines successful poetry in soul connecting terms. "Therefore poetry has not really done its work, at least its highest work, until it has raised the pleasure of the instrument and transmuted it into the deeper delight of the soul...spiritual joy is that which the soul of the poet feels and which, when he can conquer the human difficulties of his task, he succeeds in pouring also into all those who are prepared to receive it. This delight is not merely a godlike pastime; it is a great formative and illuminative power." pg 12. I, for one, feel showered in spiritual joy every time I plunge into this epic blockbuster. Well worth the time and price.

This is a wonderful collection of quotes and journal entries from both Sri Aurobindo and The Mother Mirra. Its main thesis is that there is a continuity from Aurobindo's experiences in the late 30s, through Savitri his epic poem, and then on to forming a bridge that leads to the Mother's own experiences until her death in 1973. The quotes involved talk about a sort of transfiguration that occurred between Aurobindo and Mirra. I don't think the project of the descent of the Supramental consciousness has failed but it's more that it has yet to find alignment. There is much talk about the awakening of the cells but I believe that one has to dive deeper. During Aurobindo's time, the details of what was beneath the cell was not known (such as DNA and the sort). Through Mirra's work, we have the Yoga of Cells, the crystalization of the Overmind through the psychisization of the body. However, my interpretation of the involution of the Divine is that it must go beyond the cell unto the core of the body's being. Many have claimed this is DNA, such as Richard Rudd's Gene Keys. I feel one most go further unto the molecular, atomic, quantum levels. It is like witnessing a sperm penetrating the egg's boundary- A singular instant that upon which all is transformed into supreme splendor. Cellular Consciousness is necessary for the descent of the Divine but for it to flourish the age of the Gnostic Being, the descent of the Divine must express itself deeper to the very singularity of being of which the big bang of matter occurred but this will be of spirit.

While I can sympathize with their plight, I did not find there to be enough facts. It was more similar to what one would find in a magazine, not a book. Perhaps their being Australian, my being in the USA was the reason for this difference. I do respect their effort. Thank you for the opportunity to obtain and review.

Wonderful artwork in companion tome

I remember falling in love with the first "Trumpets" book when I was a kid. I found it on one of my many visits to the local library, and I was even more thrilled to find it on sale (cheap) at a local Kmart at one point. I never found Trumpets in Grumpetland for sale anywhere, but I did also find it at the library. While the story is nothing special, as with the first book, the artwork really shines. The world of the Trumpets and Grumpets is still vivid and detailed.

I waited until I found a reasonable price for this item (around $40) and I was happy to finally acquire it recently to complete the collection. I would not spend the $100+ asked for by some sellers, but that's up to you.

Great Children's book

Second book in a series. Great illustrations, cute story, clever puns. Would recommend the purchase of the first book before purchasing this book.

I highly recommend this book

This is a delightful British book by Peter Cross. It is full of intriguing artwork, with pictures within pictures, drawings of items in odd places, yet faithful to the story of adventure between the peace-loving Trumpets and the war-like Grumpets. Exciting events unfold as the story progresses, culminating in a Grumpicat war, with the evil Grumpet leader, Havoc, fighting against the Trumpets. Stimulates a child's imagination in a unique and artful way. I highly recommend this book. All 6 of my children asked for their own copy. (Sadly out of print, so somewhat difficult to find...)
