A Unique and Practical Handbook for Succeeding

How We Succeed is unique among books about success by providing a concise and straightforward method that anyone can follow for succeeding by conducting what Gold calls “Smart Experiments.” In this way, the book sets itself apart from the crowded field of other books on success, which tend merely to describe what personality traits successful people have or what steps led to their success. One problem with these other books is that they don’t provide the kind of clear and concrete plan of action for succeeding that Gold provides. Another problem, as Gold points out, is that merely studying the actions that result in success doesn’t prove that performing those same actions won’t lead to failure. Instead, Gold has spent decades studying both the causes of success and the causes of failure, and gleaned from his observations the key factors that distinguish success from failure.
Gold’s formula for success involves designing and conducting Smart Experiments—experiments which are selected and crafted to maximize the likelihood not only of success, but of advancing your most important goals and of generating insights from which you can learn. The scale of a Smart Experiment is large enough to generate significant value if it succeeds, but small enough that if it fails, you can learn from it without exhausting your resources. Whether a Smart Experiment succeeds or fails, you can learn from it and use what you have learned to design and conduct your next Smart Experiment. As you perform many of these Smart Experiments over time, you enjoy the benefits of what Gold analogizes to compound interest. A New Approach and Real World Ready Advice - How we Succeed is Worth Reading at Least Once!

I highly recommend this book. I tend to be someone who consumes a decent amount of books in the genre (and business books in general). I also tend not to write reviews unless a book sets itself apart in some way – and I think this one has done just that.
First, the author (Steven K Gold) used a unique (nearly scientific) method to arrive at the conclusion that ‘smart experiments’ help to dictate one’s relative level of success. The approach is more experimental and less anecdotal and ultimately lends legitimacy to his subsequent advice. Instead of taking the common route of performing a postmortem on success and failure stories to find common factors or traits (and subsequently simplifying them into platitudes), the author grounded his findings and advice in the human tendencies and behaviors exhibited by people during the long process that lead to success or failure. In short, it is through firsthand findings gathered during the ramp up to success and in a methodical manner that he makes his case for smart experiments.
The ensuing advice in the book is my favorite part. I found it to be immediately applicable to my life and I think it is likely to be practical and relevant to almost anyone at any stage in life (though I recommend reading it sooner rather than later). It is well organized and it doesn’t pretend as if there is something we can all change to immediately achieve success. The advice the book shares acknowledges the fact that success takes a long time and a lot of effort and that it can only be accomplished with the use of whatever limited resources (both tangible and intangible) we have available to us.
I must say, however, that part of what separates this book from others is the way in which it is written: simple and elegant. There are no wasted words. There are no complications of simple concepts. Instead, the book starts with an evidence based, thought provoking argument, and follows with digestible advice which can be immediately applied to one’s life – regardless of situation. A wonderful formula for busy readers who want to get maximum value out of the time they invest in a book.
I highly recommend “How we Succeed” to anyone – it is a quick read and one I plan to keep on the shelf for a refresher sometime soon. The author may not have set out to write a best seller, but I’m starting to think this is the type of book we should be reading more of.

Simply practical and amazing! The applicability of this book to the education sector especially at the undergraduate level is astonishingly pragmatic. I have personally tested and used the 4 steps as described under the 'Smart Experiment' to my entrepreneurship students and have found amazing results in terms of minimizing both risks and failures while simultaneously increasing chances for success and high impact outcomes. Experimentations by entrepreneurship students at the university level has always been seen as a 'bad-debt written off' as to the nature of first-time trials that allows failures to occur 'too occasionally.' Steve Gold has managed to change my ever-long perspective of experimentations in terms of 'failure doesn't have to occur that often and it can be minimized with the smart experimentation.' The author's approach in this book has made it really simple for the students who are almost at beginner level of studying entrepreneurship (or practicing them) to understand what it takes to pursue in the right steps to increase idea generation's value to the optimum. The simple approach and techniques used in the book are also a bonus factor as it also penetrates the minds of the younger people such as my 10 year old son who applied it in building his lego!
