This is a scholar work to look at the domestic and foreign policies on China. It showed how the West Coast mainly California anti-Chinese sentiment fired up to Congress to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act 1882. But Secretary Hay made a declaration of 1899 China Open Door Policy for equal opportunity for all foreign powers in China. This book compared and contrasted American policy in US and China.

It showed how the Chinese and American played politics on economic terms. The San Francisco Chinese allied Chinese in China and around the world to stage a boycott. The unpleasant treatment to H. H. Kung, the future China's finance minister and Dr Sun Yat-sen was mentioned in the text. On pages 70 - 71, it also related a group of students from China to study at Oberlin College. They were delayed a year waiting for the certificates. a student remarked "that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a Chinaman to enter the United States".

This book also showed business, labor, religious and racist groups joined in the pro and con legislative influence.

Reading this book helps understand the past and current relationship between China and US, especially in terms of politics and economics.

A must read for all young people to start off right financially (and yes, quite a few of us old ones should read it too!)

The Future Millionaire's Guidebook is chock full of extensive financial information that I wished I had known when I first got out of college (even with a finance degree which was useless for real life finances!). The authors have managed to clearly describe financial topics in a fun and understandable way to both young and old. In one section stocks are described as "that guy or gal, your mother warned you about...fast, loose and unpredictable" and bonds are described "as the guy or gal your parents hope you end up with."

The book is very comprehensive dealing with every financial topic that one would need to know such as bad and good debt, credit cards, retirement saving, college loans, real estate, investing, taxes, and estate planning. The book also includes such items that often are not discussed in depth in other forums such as opening bank accounts, auto insurance, how to buy a car, putting aside some money for fun, and planning both short and long term goals. In each chapter there is a brief fun quiz. If you just bought the book and did each quiz, you would quickly know which chapters to focus first on. And yes, the answers are in the back but reading the chapter is the way to succeed!

I am a financial planner and I will recommend this book to all of my clients - both young and old. I see it as a great resource to initially read and then to review specific sections as needed. Money matters are not taught in school or by many parents. Money knowledge has been learned by the "seat of our pants" for most people and the results are apparent in low savings rates and high debt rates. About the Author

Carl Ross gained his first degree in Naval Architecture, from King’s College, Durham University; his PhD in Structural Engineering from the Victoria University of Manchester; and was awarded his DSc in Ocean Engineering from the CNAA, London. His research in the field of engineering led to advances in the design of submarine pressure hulls. His publications and guest lectures to date exceed some 290 papers and books, etc., and he was Professor of Structural Dynamics at the University of Portsmouth, UK.

John Bird is the former Head of Applied Electronics in the Faculty of Technology at Highbury College, Portsmouth, UK. More recently, he has combined freelance lecturing and examining. He is the author of over 125 textbooks on engineering and mathematical subjects with worldwide sales of one million copies. He is currently lecturing at the Defence School of Marine Engineering in the Defence College of Technical Training at H.M.S. Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire, UK.

Andrew Little worked for several years as a Stress Engineer for Rolls-Royce and then companies such as Ferranti Computer Systems where his specialism was the design of equipment for high stress and vibration environments. He came to the University of Portsmouth where he became involved with pressure vessel research and completed his PhD whilst lecturing full-time. He is a chartered engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers and has published 75 academic papers.
