LITERACY FOR CHILDREN IN AN INFORMATION AGE was developed in response to the urgent need for a literacy methods book that is relevant in today's information-driven society. Cowen and Cohen present a modern, useful text that defines literacy using technology and meets the changing needs of K- 12 instructors, providing practical tips for integrating technology into literacy instruction. As technology has had a profound impact on the nature of K-12 teaching-especially the teaching of reading and writing-some scholars believe that today's digital technologies have changed the meaning of "literacy." Similarly, nearly every state has included technology-related competencies in their standards at nearly every grade level. With this in mind, LITERACY FOR CHILDREN IN AN INFORMATION AGE also includes examples of best practices, software packages, and websites.

Review
"I like the real world comments. This type of information is so crucial for the pre-service teacher as it [relates] to the real world of teacher." "There is such a wonderful wealth of hands-on resources."

"A major strength of the text is that it is very comprehensive. This text covers the historical perspectives and various approaches to teaching reading that will allow elementary education majors the opportunity to reflect and make decisions about their own literacy beliefs."

"The emphasis on incorporating technology into the literacy curriculum is new and needed. The websites and ideas for using technology in the classroom are excellent."

"Most other texts with the same purpose have technological resources embedded somewhere in the verbiage, but not addressed as a separate issues. With today's workplace requiring more and more use of computers and other technological advances, it is important to educate teachers in utilizing such resources and making them available to students." "The mentioning of ELL learners and children with special needs allows the reader to make provisions for a diversified classroom. This, too, is a strength of the text."

"This is the most complete chapter that I have ever read on Expository Text! The concepts were well outlined for pre-service teacher reading and location of methods and strategies. The scaffolding activities were excellent."

Great book
By Karen Harvey
Ordered this book for an elementary literacy class taught by Dr. Cowen, the author of this book. Maybe it was just because I had the author for questions but I found the book to be extremely useful. The book is full of strategies and guides for teaching literacy in the classroom. I have since finished the class and continued to refer to the book several times since.

Terrible text
By J. Brooks
This book is pretty terrible. It is almost impossible to find what chapter you're in by flipping through the pages. The information is generally very vague, that is, when you're able to understand it through all the misspellings. For some reason every other page includes an unrelated clip art image rather than any kind of informative or aesthetically pleasing photograph. Do not purchase unless you have to and then prepare to be disappointed.
