About the Author
Louis Passfield is an applied sports scientist and an academic with expertise in training and elite performance. He is a consultant for the English Institute of Sport and has worked as sports scientist with the British Cycling team preparing for a number of Olympic Games. Rob Hayles is an Olympic track and road racing champion cyclist.

Great Primer with Coverage of the Finer Points Too

I found this to be an outstanding first read on the subject. The basics are covered well and a good mid-level view of the more advanced topics are touched on too. You won't get any hardware reviews in here (I didn't need that as I have already made my choice) so don't look for that info here. All-in-all exactly what I wanted...something to educate me quickly but thoroughly. The Hunter Allen book will probably be what I buy next if I want to go deeper in to this topic. But for now, I can talk the talk and benefit on the bike with my training.

Hauser (professor of communication, University of Colorado) provides a coherent overview of rhetoric that incorporates aspects of Aristotle, Kenneth Burke, Stephen Toulmin, Chaim Perelman, and Jurgen Habermas. Unlike other rhetorical theory textbooks, which are usually organized chronologically, Hauser's book is organized topically and focuses on contemporary understandings of rhetoric. This approach is more likely to be useful--and interesting--to beginning students of rhetoric.

The book is not without its shortcomings. The title is somewhat of a misnomer ("Introduction to Rhetorical Reasoning" or "Introduction to Rhetorical Argumentation" would be a more accurate description). And while Hauser's writing style is mostly clear, he often omits concrete examples that would help to illuminate theoretical points in further detail.

Despite the book's limitations, I recommend it for use in undergraduate rhetorical analysis or argumentation classes. At $25 new, it retails for just a fraction of what other similar textbooks cost.

Painful to read

This is the most painful text I have ever had the misfortune to read. Hauser uses five examples where one would work. He drones on in multipage illustrations that leave the reader asking, "so what." Hauser may be an expert in his field, but he has no business writing an undergraduate textbook. This text is a shining example of the problem with "publish or perish." I would avoid any course that uses this text.

Got it as a required textbook.

Even though I purchased this book for a class, it is certainly a must-read for those getting into rhetorical theory. It isn't as theory-heavy as, say, Perelman or, jeez, Derrida, but it's got enough to definitely move you forward in your journey through rhetoric.

Beautiful

I really love this book - the cover, the writing, the teaching. It contains Siddharameshwar's other book called "Master Key to Self Realisation" which for me was the best part. This is a great overview of Advaita Vedanta which seems to have come from a teaching tradition not strongly linked with Shankara, but nonetheless consistent with it. The teaching is comprehensive, clear and direct and one can see how his disciple Nisargadatta gained so much from this great teacher.

This is a Great book for Advaita Vedanta. Such a great saint and Guru to Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj and Sri Ranjit Maharaj. This book is really wonderful.

This is really 2 books, one includes 138 lectures, the other book is the Master Key to Self Realization. The lectures are wonderful and cover a broad range of topics, similar to I Am That without the questions. Brilliant. I've been engaged in spiritual work for 30 years and found the Master Key to be most lucid explanation of the basics of investigation into the 4 bodies. Guidance towards liberation.
