About the Author
JERICHO BROWN worked as speechwriter for the Mayor of New Orleans before receiving his Ph.D. in Creative Writing and Literature from the University of Houston. He also holds an M.F.A. from the University of New Orleans and a B.A. from Dillard University. The recipient of the Whiting Writers Award, the Bunting Fellowship from the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University, and two travel fellowships to the Krakow Poetry Seminar in Poland, Brown teaches at the University of San Diego where he is the Director of the Cropper Center for Creative Writing. His poems have appeared in The Iowa Review, jubilat, Oxford American, A Public Space, and several other journals and anthologies. Please, his first book, won the 2009 American Book Award.

I had the pleasure of hearing Jericho Brown read some of his work, including "Prayer of the Backhanded," a poignant composition that parades a series of violent images before the reader to convey the sense of how a father's love has become confused enough to include violence of the most intimate sort--the father's own hand being the weapon of choice--"not the pear tree/ Switch, not the broomstick,/ Nor the closest extension/ Cord, not his braided belt ..." But of course we can infer that at other times all of these objects were also used. A few lines later Brown writes: "[A] hand that took/ No thought of its target/ Like hail from a blind sky." A son is reduced to an object, and a father takes on the indifference of the inanimate world. These lines succeed as well as they do because they are almost dispassionate observation when it would have been easy for Brown to lapse into sentimentality.
While the strength of this poem on the page is considerable, it was that much more resonant when Brown read it aloud. His reading style--characterized by slow, precise enunciation--delineated a rhythm that is, in the absence of the author, left up to the reader to interpret. Brown's quietly intense style lends weight to the suggestion that poetry, an oral art for most of its history, might be better served by the CD than the chapbook. I read "Prayer of the Backhanded" before hearing it, and while both are worthwhile experiences, they are significantly different.
The language of Brown's poetry sometimes follows the rhythms of the street, as in "Autobiography," where we read "Keep talking smart if you want to/ Keep looking at my man/ And I'll cut you a new eyelid." In other poems it is more formal, but it never becomes academic; there are no words that call for a dictionary. The result, because Brown wields his lexicon so deftly, is natural, almost as though these were not poems at all but snatches of thought or long internal monologues.
Violence and injury--both psychological and physical--comprise the book's most common motif. What is perhaps most characteristic of Brown, however, is the way that, so often, love, violence, and hurt form a kind of triangle. "Lush Life," the first poem in Please, has been branded with at least two sides of this triangle: "The woman with the microphone sings to hurt you ... the mic may as well be a leather belt." And once again, a loved one is meting out the punishment.
Music often accompanies these episodes of pain, as in "Lush Life" and "Gulf." "Gulf" moves toward its conclusion with "A song our mothers sang ..." Six poems, in fact, are referred to as "tracks" as on an album. "Track 4: Reflections" is devoted to Diana Ross, while "Track 5: Summertime" is narrated by Janis Joplin, and a familiar image of injury recurs: "The good and perfect gifts/ From above hit like lightning, leave bruises." In this poem we find another repeated image: "I saw some kids whip him with a belt while he/ Repeated, Please." A few lines later: God must love Willie Baker--all that leather and still/ A please that sounds like music." This collection operates essentially the same way: all this pain that sounds like poetry.

Very powerful, very creative, important work and voice ...

Very powerful, very creative, important work and voice. I saw Jericho Brown at UMass Amherst and he answered questions after his reading. He noted he builds a poem line by line ("stacks" them). He does not journal on his work because after he would reread his entries, who thought he 'sounded' very depressed. Writing such works, with such a voice, is difficult as it is a difficult subject. It's hard to stay positive; he was a very upbeat, charismatic, young professor. Very engaging. I also purchased The New Testament from which he read one March evening at UMass's The Visiting Writer lecture series. Fabulous - bravo, Jericho!

Cinderella Romance from Neels

It's always a pleasure to find a Betty Neels that I've missed before. I get my special embroidered, scallop-edged bookmark and settle in for a gentle romance.
There is another Neels' book titled Love Can Wait, but it's a different story (heroine is Emma).
In this one, Kate Crosby slaves as a cook for hard-to-please Lady Cowder. Her employer's nephew recognizes that Kate is special and deserves a better life. He makes an effort to smooth her path and gradually realizes he loves her.
As usual, there are misunderstandings, a mean-spirited rival, and the soothing triva of daily life. Neels turns out a pleasant read that always transports me to England (and sometimes Holland) through the lives of her characters.

She's nice and can cook too.

Back Cover description: MARRIAGE ON HIS MIND? Kate Crosby was determined to be independent. Her dreams were of owning her own catering business, not of marriage and babies! For now, she was happy enough putting her skills into practice as a housekeeper. She certainly wasn't looking for a husband...Until Mr. James Tait-Bouverie came to visit. He was irresistibly charming and firmly believed that love couldn't wait! James challenged all Kate's plans for the future. He challenged her to love him, to marry him. What if Kate said yes?
Ok, who writes these plot descriptions? As a long time reader of Ms. Neels, I almost didn't read this book because of this description. Don't worry, this book is like all the rest, Kate is stuck in a nasty job (she is not happy) and instead of dragging animals around, in this book it's her mother. And James is like all the rest of Ms. Neels' heroes, silent and not saying much about marriage to the heroine. Enjoy

Slow, sweet romance.

Love Can Wait is a pleasant romance that forgoes the usual trapping of romance that readers familiar with Betty Neels have come to expect. There are few romantic, cozy moments and if you are looking for romantic adventure, dancing and dining, pretty clothes and parties, you will be disappointed. If you enjoy a slow, sweet story about two people falling in love, you will be pleased.

Kate Crosby's father's sudden death left her and her mother in dire financial straits, forcing them to give up their comfortable home and lifestyle. Kate takes a job working as a cook and housekeeper in order to pay the rent on a small cottage for her mother, and carefully puts away a little each payday. Her employer is a crotchety old woman, miserly and rude. Kate endures stoically, carefully keeping her expression and voice bland. Her goal is to save 100 pounds and apply for a loan to start a catering business, and she will do whatever it takes.

Luckily for her, the woman's nephew is our hero, Dr. James Tait-Bouverie, who drives a Bentley. James makes a duty-visit to his aunt, and finds that he cannot get the quiet housekeeper out of his mind. He tries to help Kate by suggesting his aunt visit Holland and take her as a companion, thus our visit to that country, and in other ways as the story progresses.

Kate knows that she, being the housekeeper/cook/companion cannot be friendly with her employer's guests, including James, and rebuffs his attention. He turns up often, however, and Kate soon finds that she has fallen in love. But, she keeps her feelings hidden and focuses on achieving her goal and caring for her mother. James, having decided she is the woman he will marry, has to work hard to break past her shell.

There is a misunderstanding, of course, but it does not play a huge part in the story- this is mainly about the hero and heroine. I liked the way we are privy to a great deal of James' thoughts and action far more in this book than in most Neels books. I found the last part of the book was not as good as the first, and the end is very sudden. Overall, it is still a very pleasant book.

About the Author
Anthony F. Molland is Emeritus Professor of Ship Design at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. For many years, Professor Molland has extensively researched and published papers on ship design and ship hydrodynamics including propellers and ship resistance components, ship rudders and control surfaces. He also acts as a consultant to industry in these subject areas and has gained international recognition through presentations at conferences and membership of committees of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC). Professor Molland is the co-author of Marine Rudders and Control Surfaces (2007) and editor of Maritime Engineering Reference Book (2008). Stephen R. Turnock is Professor of Maritime Fluid Dynamics at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Professor Turnock lectures on many subjects, including ship resistance and propulsion, powercraft performance, marine renewable energy and applications of CFD. His research encompasses both experimental and theoretical work on energy efficiency of shipping, performance sport, underwater systems and renewable energy devices, together with the application of CFD for the design of propulsion systems and control surfaces. He acts as a consultant to industry in these subject areas, and as a member of the committees of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) and International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress (ISSC). Professor Turnock is the co-author of Marine Rudders and Control Surfaces (2007). Dominic A. Hudson is Senior Lecturer in Ship Science at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Dr Hudson lectures on ship resistance and propulsion, powercraft performance and design, recreational and high speed craft and ship design. His research interests are in all areas of ship hydrodynamics, including experimental and theoretical work on ship resistance components, seakeeping and manoeuvring, together with ship design for minimum energy consumption. The authors have collected and organized virtually all of the public domain data regarding ship resistance and propulsion of marine surface vessels into one significant reference book. It is a reference library in one volume. It will be of value to students and practicing designers who have limited access to a technical reference sources regarding surface ships and small craft.

This book compiles the most important systematic series and classical methods for estimating ships in the design stage. Easy to read and to implement in any programming language. The application examples of this book are a nice way to check your algorithms. Every Naval Architecture student should buy a copy to add in his personal library.

The references may be of help to assure you that the empirical formulas are correct.

Helping with the Death Process

This book helped me to reaize what was happening to my loved one when he died.
I wanted to find another Kubler-Ross book but this was the only one available. This book is a collection of lectures that she gave on tour.
Even tho my loved one was an adult, the stories of how children viewed death helped me to understand that usually, a person knows when they are dying and find ways to prepare themselves for it. I could relate it to things that had happened in my loved one's life. I have shared this book with others. We felt a great sense of peace and comfort from learning how death affects the young and the old.
Especially interesting was the comforting thought of the process of death--what happens at the time death occurs. Also the hope of an afterlife.
I recommend this book to anyone facing the death of a loved one.

This book changed my life

I know the subject line can be seen as "cliche" these days, but it's nonetheless true. It actually saved my life during a time when all seemed lost.
The passing of my mother threw me into a tailspin and this book helped me to deal with it all.
Kubler-Ross comes through as a unique voice; this series of lectures makes one feel like she is taking directly to you. You can really feel her wisdom and years of experience throughout this book.
It's very hard to absorb it all, but it makes a lasting impression. The overall feeling one is left with is...It feels like it's using the nonverbal language that she so often refers to in the book. And yet it is so intelligently and articulately expressed that it certainly requires multiple readings.
I also recommend On Death and Dying, but it is much more a dissertation and observational study on the topic than an expression of Kubler-Ross's years of study and insight.

TO READ THIS BOOK WAS TO RETURN TO HER WORKSHOP

Recently I was asked to do a presentation on Elisabeth Kubler-Ross for an adult education class. As Elisabeth was my friend and mentor after I attended her 1985 workshop, and I was her contact person for Ontario, Canada, it gave me great pleasure to review her work and insights again through a book she had given me personally in 1996, after her retirement. I have read all her books, but found this one beautifully encapsulating what she gave her workshop participants. It's a compilation of her talks in many venues, and her personality and sense of humor come across strongly. It's a quick read, but once you open its pages, it's hard to put down. And after reading it, her timeless teachings of unconditional love and looking after one's "unfinished business," remain to prod the reader. Thanks, Elisabeth, for taking me back to a turning point in my own life story.

New "Rules" Of more relevance

These strategy "rules" are worth reading and reflecting on. They are not the "rules" of genius strategists. But these are some powerful insights into how contemporary strategists (business or military or governmental or non-governmental sector) need to think about "strategising." Perhaps the most significant one - Look Forward, Reason Back" is the one that is most ignored by conventionalists. All three IT industry leaders recognized the folly of desperately seeking verities from history for guides on what to do when we are functioning in an era of exponential technological transformation. History is not what it used to be. This is not a though-out-the-baby-with-the-bathwater approach. But it does recognise that getting a better understanding of the technology-driven trends and dynamics in the realms of nano-bio-robo-info are upending in many cases historical Industrial Age experience that has predominated strategic thinking and theory - no longer find out what worked and repeat it, find out what didn't work and don't.

It is about the common strategies they have taken, the common challenges they have faced, and even their mistakes (not necessarily common). Besides the authors have worked with them directly. I do suggest reading this book to the people who want to learn about strategy.

About the Author

Gareth Schmeling has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Philosophical Society, and has won the Rome Prize in Classics. He has taught at the University of Virginia, the University of Colorado, Johns Hopkins University, and spent most of his career at the University of Florida. He has authored books on the Greek and Roman novels, with a special focus on Petronius.
